Tired Of Chemicals? Grow An Organic Garden With These Tips

Is the grass always greener over there? Has your neighbor found the secret ingredients that makes their garden an eye-catching feature? The fact is, there is no secret in getting a beautiful garden. What is truth is that knowledge and information on how to properly love your plants is what is the key. You can get started on your horticulture adventure by reading the advice in this informative article.

Turn the handles of tools you have on hand into rulers to make measurements in your garden. Tools with long handles, such as shovels, hoes and rakes can be made into measuring sticks. Place the handles on the floor, then set a measuring tape alongside them. You can label distances using a permanent marker. Next time you are working in the garden, you will have a large ruler at your fingertips!

TIP! It can be very hard to shovel clay soil, especially when it sticks to your shovel as you are working. Make your shoveling job easier by lightly coating a shovel with a layer of wax, then buffing the surface.

When fall has arrived, it is time to plant the edibles for the autumn. If you want to find an interesting container for your lettuce or kale, try a pumpkin! Once you cut an opening at the top of the pumpkin and scoop out the insides, spray the inside and edges with Wilt-Pruf to keep the pumpkin from rotting. You are prepared to plant after this is done.

If you decide to grow peas, think about planting them indoors when you first start them off, as opposed to planting them outdoors. If you plant them inside, they might germinate more effectively. The seedlings will also be heartier, which means they can resist pests and diseases better. Transplant them outside when they are fully established and able to thrive.

Do not use broad-spectrum pesticides within your garden. Besides killing the insects you don’t want, this type of pesticide will also kill beneficial insects. Useful insects are more sensitive to these pesticides than the pests, so by killing them, you could be growing your pest population. This ends up becoming a vicious cycle of increasing pesticide use.

TIP! If your soil has high alkaline amounts, mix some coffee grounds into it. This is a great and cheap way to increase the acid levels in your dirt.

Spray fragrances such as old perfume or aftershave on grass around your garden to help keep your dog away from the plants. This will mask the garden smell that is attracting your dog, and it will make it a less appealing place for your dog to visit.

Mixing a variety of plants at different heights is how you can make a very interesting English garden. You should avoid using plants of the same height so that your flower bed doesn’t look flat and uniform.

Pine is a mulch that is great. Some plants have a naturally high acidic level, and therefore like acidic soil. If you have acid loving plants, use pine needles as a mulch. Cover your beds with two inches of needles; acid will be dispersed into the soil as they decompose.

TIP! Irises can benefit from being separated. You can divide those overgrown clumps and increase the amount of irises you have.

Do you want to kill weeds naturally? Take layers of newspapers and use them for weed control. Without exposure to the sun, weeds cannot thrive. When you put newspaper on top of weeds they will suffocate because they are not getting enough light. Newspapers break down over time, and they make a great addition to compost. Add visual appeal by placing some mulch over the top.

So, you can see that these suggestions are rather simple and easy to follow. You just need a bit of instruction on what to do, then the time to apply what you have learned. Observe the response of your plants to the various techniques you try. Refine your methods as you go! Just be patient, and ultimately your garden is going to be loved and envied by everyone.
